Even as a full-figured, married woman, there have been times that I've been at the gas station or grocery store and caught the eye of some guy in there. This is also something I've talked about with some of my plus size friends, too. As bigger, white women, a lot of times, we've noticed that the gaze we attract is from African American males. It really makes you think about why that reason may be and what really causes a person to be attracted to someone. So, do black guys like fat white women? Black guys like fat white women based on examples in pop culture and music, but it's a stereotype. Black men also like other body types. Culture plays a role since black culture is historically more accepting of a curvier female body. The availability of bigger white women compared to other races plays a role, too. Below, we'll talk a little more about what factors make it seem like black guys do like white women. I'll also give you some examples of these types of relationships and what factors actually come into play when it comes to being attracted to another person. Do Black Guys Like Fat White Women? Well, yes and no. The truth is that there's a lot more that goes into a person's preferences when it comes to body type than just their race. Additionally, the idea that every black man out there likes fat, white women though is nothing more than a stereotype. With that being said, if you look at the examples we'll talk about in a minute, it's clear that there is a trend of black men being attracted to plus size white women. This happens for two different reasons, including cultural attitudes toward body types and the availability of curvier women compared to the rest of the population. How Cultural Attitudes Shape Body Preferences First, black guys seem to like fat white women because black culture is more accepting of the female body. In hip hop, for example, women like Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, and Lil Kim all pioneered the body positivity movement with their curvy bodies. (This isn't to say that they don't have their own challenges, of course.) Black women are also more "accepted" by the media, whereas there's a lot of pressure from white media to be thin if you want to be accepted. In this study, for example, the results showed that black men were more accepting of a lower waist-to-hip ratio, which means that they are more accepting when a woman's tummy and hips are both rounder than a white male is. According to this study from Cornell University, these attitudes started shifting in the 1990s. Attitudes toward the female body were similar among whites, blacks, and other cultures when this research was conducted in the 1970s, but black men were more accepting of a bigger female body when the hypothesis was revisited in the 1990s. The Role That Accessibility Plays in This Stereotype Something else to keep in mind is that the reason you may see a lot of black men with plus size white women is that there are a lot of bigger white women living in the United States. According to 2022 statistics from the U.S. Census, about 50.5% of the population is female. However, about 75.8% of the United States population is also white. This comes into play because with there being a significantly less number of African Americans, it only makes sense that some of them would end up in relationships with white females. Additionally, with around 41.9% of the population being overweight or obese, that means that there is a pretty significant amount of curvy white women in the world compared to other genders, ethnicities, and body types. The final thing that comes into play is that society as a whole has started accepting the bigger body a little bit more. As relationships between black males and curvier white women become more common, other people do it just because that is what they see and what is socially acceptable. Examples of Black Men Liking Fat Women The music industry is probably one of the best examples of black attitudes toward the curvier female body. Hip-hop and rap music can be derogative toward women and their roles in a relationship, but we aren't really here to talk about that. What we are here to talk about are attitudes toward the bigger female body. There are quite a few song lyrics in hip-hop and rap that talk about this. For example, while I'd never call either of these women fat, Khloe Kardashian and Mariah Carey are both known for being curvier and being married to black men. What Actually Shapes Attraction? So, if black men liking fat white women is just a stereotype, what actually shapes attraction? There are five identified factors, including physical attractiveness, proximity, similarity, reciprocity, and familiarity. When it comes to physical attractiveness, beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. People find different features attractive depending on things like cultural attitudes and acceptance and their own exposure to different body types and attitudes throughout their lives. Often, when we are physically attracted to someone, we also associate them with other positive traits. This is known as the "halo effect". This makes it more likely that a person will date or try to date someone because they associate them with positive traits like being funny or caring. Proximity comes into play because being exposed to something repetitively can make us tolerate it, then like it. This is the reason that someone might be attracted to a coworker after some time, even if they find them annoying. However, things like online dating have made proximity less important in relationships. When you have access to all kinds of people, it's easy to make comparisons between others and deem one as more attractive or less attractive. It's made dating a lot more competitive than it once was. With familiarity, sometimes people have an innate attraction to someone because they share features with someone they already have positive feelings about. It's also common for people to like someone based on shared interests, or similarities. Generally, people like themselves. It would only make sense that they also like someone who has the same attitudes and beliefs or is otherwise similar to them. Finally, reciprocation must be considered. If a person doesn't reciprocate romantic advances, then it can either make them more or less desirable. Some people prefer a partner that is interested right away, while others prefer the chase. Final Word So, do black men like fat white women? They do, simply because black culture typically has a much more positive view of the female body type when it comes to a rounder, plus size shape. However, this isn't the only body shape that they like. Even with examples in music and pop culture, it's clear that the attractiveness of white women when it comes to African American males is based on things like cultural acceptance and the availability of white women with a bigger body type. There are still a number of other factors of attraction at play, so it's not really fair to say that all black males prefer a bigger body type.
