7 Best Women’s Plus Size Capris

It might seem like the do’s and don’ts of fashion are telling you that capris aren’t for you and your full feminine figure…but I’m here to tell you that’s all wrong!

In fact, I’m here to tell you that they can be an amazing addition to your wardrobe!

Sure, capris, in general, have a bad reputation. The wrong kind can visually shorten your legs, or highlight certain areas you might not want to be highlighted.

However cropped pants of any kind are great for those of us who don’t feel like wearing shorts or live in areas where the summer is mild. They can also be the perfect casual wear or part of your formal style but with a twist. (I also love that there isn’t nearly as big of a risk of the dreaded thigh chafing with capris compared to shorts).

The key to finding the perfect capris pants, no matter your size, is finding the right style, and fit. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do here.

We’ll examine how to choose the right capris for you, possible things to avoid, and most importantly the best plus size capris options out there. If you want to skip ahead and see what our top plus size capris picks are, you can check them out here:

Let’s get started!

How To Choose The Right Plus Size Capris?

Capris are cropped pants that usually stop above the ankle but below the knee. Some are longer than others and the difference in length actually plays a pretty big role in how good a pair of capris look on your body.

When you go with the wrong length, there’s a big risk of visually shortening your legs. This can make you look bulkier, too. Let’s be honest, that’s something that no curvier woman wants.

Aside from these “dangers” that contrary to popular belief are easy to manage, capris are actually my favorite type of bottom wear. They can make you look fresh and playful and the right fit can accentuate your figure.

Capris are also cooler than pants in the summer. Most importantly (for me anyway), they don’t ride up like shorts and I don’t have to worry about my thighs rubbing together when I’m wearing them. I do NOT enjoy chub rub (as my friends and I call it) when I’m out trying to have a good time.

So, let’s see what you need to consider before buying yourself a capris pair.

Choose The Right Length

As I’ve already mentioned when it comes to looking good in capris you need to look at length. If you go too short or too long, it can mess up your proportions no matter how tall you are and especially if you’re on the shorter side like me.

Being top-heavy I still rock a pair of strong calves and after a long day’s work, my ankles can get somewhat swollen. For some this might mean no capris, but not for me. With some trials and errors, I’ve found that my “sweet spot” ends at the thinnest part of my leg, just below the widest part of my calf.

We all have that sweet spot and it can be different for everyone, and it also has to do with personal preference. If for example, you have a calf tattoo you might want to go for a shorter pair of capris to show off your body artwork.

If you feel like your calves are muscular and you want to soften that part, then capris that end just above the ankle might be what you’re looking for. If you’re like me with more or less regular-sized calves in comparison to my whole body, then a more suitable length would be somewhere between your calf and ankle.

Just because you’re plus-sized doesn’t mean that you don’t have a body shape. If you have a pear shape you might want to go for longer capris, but if your leg narrows in more below the knee then you can wear knee-length capris or have them stop at the fullest part of your calf to make that area look wider instead.

Choose The Right Cut

Aside from finding the perfect length that makes you feel good about how your legs look to you, take a moment to look at the cut. Some capris narrow down, and others flare out.

By wearing a tapered or straight leg you can elongate your legs, on the other hand, capri pants with wide leg openings can visually break your silhouette, either by accentuating your calves or making your legs look shorter.

As you can see when it comes to capris pants it truly doesn’t matter how big you are, it’s all about balancing out your figure, and height plays a much more important role in affecting your proportions.

I usually go for capris that follow my natural leg line and avoid a very tight leg line since that accentuates my apple-shaped figure. Depending on your height and calves, a wider cut might work best for you, but tapered capris are usually the way to go.

Choose The Right Fit

Aside from the length and hem of your capris, I think the one thing that truly will make a pair of cropped pants look good on anyone is the fit. This is something that we larger folks can truly struggle with.

You might have a big booty, but a small waist, which means that the wrong capris can sit perfectly on your bottom, but have a very wide waistline. For some it’s the opposite, the bottom of the capris looks saggy, but they can’t close the zipper.

When trying on a pair, look for some elasticity in the thigh area as well as the waist, so you can easily pull them up but still have a fitted result. Make sure you look at the zipper and how strained it is, as well as the pockets that might gape open from the pressure. This is definitely a sign that the capris don’t fit properly and will feel uncomfortable in the long run.

The most important thing for me is comfort so if the fit is right, and all things are falling into their rightful places then you will know they’re the one!

Consider The Rise

I’m sure we all remember the popularity and horror of low-waisted pants, shorts, and everything in between. So, you can imagine how happy I am that high-waisted jeans and all kinds of pants are dominating the market.

Not only do I find a higher waist more comfortable, but it also does look more flattering as it gives me a curvier figure. Most importantly, my legs appear longer which is perfect for when you’re wearing capris.

Of course, everyone is different and for those of you who feel that your legs appear too long in comparison to their short torso, mid-rise capris might visually lower the waist. This doesn’t mean that these are the ultimate rules on capris rise, but if you’re looking for ways to feel better about the fit of your pants and finally give capris ago I truly think it can help!

Choose Durable Materials

Finally, one thing that I always look out for when buying a new pair of capris is longevity and durability. Despite what people might think plenty of large folks lead active lives, and comfortable clothing can truly help with feeling motivated and good about yourself.

The last thing anyone wants is to see tears on their new pair of capris after a walk or a day’s work. I’ve had enough wardrobe malfunctions that I can laugh about now, but it’s always embarrassing at that moment, and while other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter it’s hard to not care.

So, make sure you consider the fabric of the capris pants you select. Go for stretchy comfortable pairs but be mindful that they might stretch out over time. Cheaper materials will crease easily and might stretch over the course of the day looking too buggy.

Sturdy denim is also a great choice since it’ll most likely be more durable than thin elastic capris. Depending on the season you can go for looser linen capris that will help you make it through the summer, but overall avoid thin fabrics that can rip and stretch easily especially if you enjoy activities that require your flexibility!

How To Wear Capri Pants If You’re Short?

When looking for clothes I rarely see my weight as an obstacle because I know that what matters to me is getting the perfect fit that will complement my shape. Usually, the real obstacle is non-inclusive companies that don’t offer plus-size options. Or companies that do offer plus size options, but those options are unflattering, poorly cut, or just ugly.

With capris or any type of cropped pants on the other hand my concern has mostly been my height, which is on the short side. Don’t get me wrong I’ve got zero issues with how tall I am, but when it comes to short pants, I really want to make sure they don’t distort my proportions.

Nailing Your Proportions

The best way to have capris complement your shape when you’re short is to avoid bulky details, like big cargo-style side pockets. You should also look for capris with narrow cuffs to give you a more elongated look.

I think the most important detail when you’re short is the length of the capris. While taller people can go for ankle-long capris, I think shorter-style capris look best on someone on the shorter side.

While this may be true, someone who is short could still have long legs in which case they can go for shorter capris that go just below the knee or they might even get away with a longer length, as long as the pants are close-fitting.

As always no matter your shape, size, or height there are definitely small tricks you can incorporate into your style while wearing capris to help elevate your look, complement your large figure and elongate your short stature.

Our Top Women’s Plus Size Capris Picks?

Cropped pants of any kind can be scary, but my #1 pick when it comes to best plus size capris are no nightmare, but a dream.

Thanks to their relaxed fit they’re very comfy and suitable for different activities, and you can even dress them up by wearing a cute top. Despite being made to be flexible the fabric stays crisp with no creases whatsoever.

The Lee capris were definitely designed for plus-size women and they’re true to their size. If you’re larger at the thighs and rear these pants should fit your hips without the waistline ending up too large, so you can forget about belts.

My favorite thing about these wonderful capris is the material. Since they’re made of 98% cotton, you know they’re going to be breathable and suitable for summer, while the 2% spandex gives them enough elasticity to accommodate your glorious figure!

What I Love About Them: While there are six functional pockets these pants don’t look bulky!

What I Wish They Had: These capris are definitely on the shorter side, so I’d like them to be a bit longer.

I know what you’re thinking, another Lee brand capris, but if you want a fitting pair of cargo capris that work for a plus size figure you got to go with this brand and this pair in particular.

These capris should work great for someone with a pear shape since the knit waist is pretty close-fitting but comfortable.

The straight line of these capris will definitely make your legs appear longer which is great for the plus-size girls on the short size.

The material stretches enough to mold to your body and doesn’t end up being baggy after a day’s wear. They might wrinkle after a wash in the washing machine so keep in mind that you might need to iron them.

The reason they didn’t make it to number one is that they are more causal looking and they only come in two colors, beige and black. But they’re still worth checking out and you can see the latest price on Amazon by clicking here.

What I Love About Them: The fabric is thin and soft, but not too much, so it’s perfect for warmer weather!

What I Wish They Had: These pants have a solid snap instead of a button.

While all of the capris on this list are suitable for plus-size bodies with thick thighs, this is definitely a great choice for those of you who are rocking a pear-shaped booty. Plus, they have that classic 5-pocket design that is functional, but cute.

Unique 5 pocket design on these capris

Most importantly this pair of capris are the curvy cut, and their waist is smaller so you most likely won’t need a belt. Here’s how the cut (and the length) looks like on a size 20.

Definitely more generous in the hip and thigh area, they offer a tight fit but are comfortable enough to go about your day. So, you definitely won’t have these pants falling off of you the more you wear them.

But, there is enough stretch that they fit a curvier body, especially since we all seem to be shaped differently.

This specific fit and fabric are definitely durable and thick enough to cover any problem areas you might be feeling self-conscious about.

You can read more reviews and see today’s price on Amazon by clicking here.

What I Love About Them: Just as sturdy as a pair of jeans.

Best For Working Out: Just My Size Women’s French Terry Capri

Best For Working Out
Just My Size Women's French Terry Capri
  • Has a wide, ribbed waistband with adjustable outer drawcord for the perfect fit
  • The French terry fabric is smooth on the outside and brushed inside for extra softness

Whether you’re looking for workout capris, or you simply want to have a pair of comfortable pants to go about your day you don’t have to look any further. The JMS french terry capris are cotton-rich which means extra softness and since they’re a bit thick they won’t wrinkle or get baggy at the knees.

You’ll also see that they’re a true plus-size so if you feel a bit self-conscious wearing shorts these are the perfect alternative.

As I’ve mentioned before my legs can get a bit swollen after a long walk so the loose fit of the JMS capris, especially around the calves really sit beautifully on me.

What I Love About Them: The waistband is extra comfy while the drawstring is broad and sturdy.

What I Wish They Had: The fabric might be too thick for a hot summer.

Best Capris on a Budget: MOREFEEL High Waist Capri Leggings

Best Capris on a Budget
MOREFEEL High Waist Capri Leggings
  • Endless amount of stretch without becoming transparent
  • Incredibly soft and comfortable to wear
  • Pockets, because who doesn’t love capri leggings with pockets

Now, I did warn you against buying leggings that are too thin. Not only can they become transparent if they get stretched too much, but there’s a risk of wearing holes in the fabric over time from your thighs rubbing together.

I like these leggings because they have plenty of stretch, but they aren’t so stretchy that they thin out or become transparent. Take a look.

These capris feel great (and look great). I love the animal print because while these are black and will match tons of tops in my wardrobe, they also have some personality. Plus, the length hugs my calves perfectly.

They are perfect for doing things around the house, but also decent enough that you can answer the door in them. Plus, they have pockets, which is always a selling point for me.

While these are advertised as tummy-control leggings and they do have the high-waist that I love, they don’t necessarily provide support in a way that controls or smooths the tummy in any way. Regardless, they are perfect for the price point.

What I Love About Them: Super soft feel, stretchy without being transparent

What I Wish They Had: A little more tummy control

Best For Dressing Up: Hanna Nikole Women’s Plus Size Cropped Paper Bag Pants

Best For Dressing Up
Hanna Nikole Women's Plus Size Cropped Paper Bag Pants
  • Plus size design with an elastic waist with removable belt
  • Two large enough pockets for your phone and keys
  • These pants are made from 95% Polyester and 5% Spandex, for a stretchy and comfy fit
  • Little elastic Waist circumference: From 16W (34-49 1/2 inch) to 24W(42-57 1/2 inch)

While I do think my top pick on this list is a true winner, I can’t hide the fact that this pair of capris is absolutely one of my favorite. I mean look at the cute and elegant design with a somewhat vintage aesthetic to them.

The high waist and the longer length will definitely accentuate your proportions in the best way possible. They have a more relaxed fit and don’t come off as baggy, and the fact that they’re high-waisted with that cute bow really helps, not necessarily hide my belly, but make it look beautiful and proportionate to the rest of my figure.

The Hana Nikole capris are simply perfect for all occasions, whether you want to wear them for office work, or you have a party to attend.

Best Jean Capris: Lee Women’s Flex Motion Regular Fit Capri Jeans

Best Jean Capris
Lee Women's Flex Motion Regular Fit Capri Jeans
  • 5-way stretch means these jeans move with you for all day comfort
  • Elastic waistband that looks like regular jeans, perfect for anyone who needs a little extra stretch
  • True to size, so no complicated ordering

When it comes to clothing, my husband and I both have complaints about finding the right pair of jeans that works for larger bodies. Frankly, wearing jeans never sounded like something comfortable until I tried these Lee capris jeans and realized that you can have a full figure and still rock this material.

They’re not only super comfy, but the material is durable and most importantly long-lasting. I promise that as long as you wear these pants you can forget about the sound of jeans tearing! Check out how easily the waistband stretches.

Since they’re quite sturdy it means that they’ll stay the size they were when you first put them, however, they still allow you to move freely. I also love the way these are faded- fading around the pocket area like these usually makes your butt shape look great.

Plus, the cuffs of these are tight enough that they give your legs a slimmer look, but not so tight that they can’t be rolled up. The cuff looks great rolled or unrolled depending on your length preference and it’s almost like getting two jean capris for the price of one.

Jeans capris are the perfect pair of pants that can work almost for any occasion. All you have to do is change your top from casual to formal and you’ll look the part!

What I Love About Them: The high rise on these jeans definitely helps keep all the proportions right.

What I Wish They Had: I’d prefer a tapered hem since these capris flare out slightly.

How To Style Capris and Cropped Pants On A Full Figure?

If you still feel somewhat self-conscious about capris there are ways you can make them work for your body type. As I often say to myself, I can’t live my life saying no to things just because I don’t fit the beauty standards of our society.

Instead, I want to say yes to all the places I want to travel, all the activities I want to explore, and the clothes I want to wear.

That’s why I also want to boost your confidence and convince you that capris can work for plus-sized women. All you need to do is get a great fitting pair of capris in the perfect length and the right cut for you and style it in a way that will create a flattering ensemble!

So, let’s explore capris styling!

Choose The Right Top

When it comes to fashion, I truly believe that there are no rules. I mostly prioritize my comfort and I like to mix and match my clothes depending on the mood, but I do also gravitate towards certain styling techniques that help me create the proportions that make me appreciate my body even more.

Capris can be difficult but and that’s why you need to look at the bigger picture. I usually pair high wasted capris pants with a shorter shirt to balance out my frame and make my legs appear longer. It doesn’t have to be a crop top or fitted shirt, but a loose blouse that doesn’t hide my belly completely.

I find tapered capris very flattering when paired with a wider shirt, and if you’re tall you can wear longer tops, even use a soft belt around your tummy to accentuate your proportions, or a nice buttoned-up shirt with a nice cardigan for a dressier look.

The thing with capris is that they are an excellent choice during transitional weather and a great alternative to shorts in the summertime for those of us who might feel too exposed to something that goes over our knees. Capris were definitely my number one choice during my biggest adventure across Asia!

Pick The Right Footwear

As always accessories are a personal choice dictated by our tastes, but shoes can really help elevate your capris game. Sure, if you’re going for workout cropped pants then the choice is easy, you pair them with your trainers. When it comes to a casual look though, things might not seem as easy.

First of all, to elongate your legs you could try a shoe that’s a neutral color that matches your skin, or the same color as your capris. Sandals with a slim cut can also help make the leg appear longer, and if you’re feeling cheeky you can go for a low chunky heel.

And while I know I just told you that a nude shoe works best with capris, I love color, so I always wear flashy and colorful footwear. This styling usually draws more attention to the shoe than whether the length of my capris is a bit too long or short.

Don’t Be Afraid of Bold Colors

I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced this feeling, but for many years being large had created the need in me to hide, never be seen, or attract attention. Nowadays I’m consciously trying to stop these thoughts. I love colors, I love being big, bold, and beautiful and that’s what kind of capris I go for.

Sure you can go all black to look taller and proportionate, but I like to mix things up. I have a great pair of red capris that I usually pair with a white blouse. And while I love monochromatic pants, I also like patterns.

Instead of wearing capris with a large print I usually go for one with smaller designs to avoid shortening the bottom half of my body. If you’re large like me but tall then you can go for larger prints, floral patterns, and the like.

Instead of hiding the fact that I’m wearing capris I’m celebrating them by choosing the flashiest of colors!

Wear Your Capris With Confidence

Last but not least, the best advice I can give you is to be confident. A good pair of capris can boost your self-esteem for sure, but you’re the one wearing these pants, and not the other way around.

Be playful with what you wear, wear eye-catching accessories, the colors that speak to your soul, and simply enjoy your body no matter what you’re wearing. It was a long journey for me and I still struggle from time to time. My relationship with my body is a constant work in progress, and if you feel the same just know that the only way to heal is to face these fears and wear them on your beautiful larger than life body!

Closing Thoughts

Here we are at the end of this article. We’ve seen all kinds of capris pants, different lengths, cuts, and materials. Now all you have to do is pick the one that feels right for you and wear it in whatever combination makes you appreciate your body.

I truly hope that the list of my top plus-sized capris and my thoughts on how to choose the right type will leave you less discouraged and more curious to explore what kind of cropped pants will suit you and your needs!
