11 Best Bikes For Plus Size Women

When it comes to exercise and sport, being a woman with a full figure can be challenging, not so much because of our own size, but mostly because of how society tries to make us feel small for being big.

However, I truly believe we are not just big women, but we are also strong, and we can conquer anything we set our minds to.

In any case, my top tip is to start small, and cycling is one of those all-encompassing activities that can ease us into the world of exercise, exploration, and adventure.

But first, you’ll need a bike that aligns with your needs, whether that’s cycling on off-road mountain trails or commuting around the city, and a bike that can safely and comfortably take you anywhere you want to pedal.

That’s why I made a list of my top bike choices designed specifically for plus-size women.

I also talk in-depth about why you need a bike for heavy riders and what makes a bike female-friendly, but if you want to skip ahead and check out the bikes that made it on our list then you can find them here.

Let’s get into it!

Our Top 11 Bikes For Heavy Women

Often times the market does not cater to larger individuals, but even though bikes do have weight limits this doesn’t mean we’re out of options.

In fact, there are many bike brands that offer multiple plus-size options so let’s take a look at our top 11 bikes!

1. Best Overall: Firmstrong Bella Classic Beach Cruise Bicycle

Firmstrong Bella Classic 3-Speed Beach Cruiser Bicycle, 26-Inch, Baby Blue, (15119)
  • The recommended weight limit is 350 lbs.
  • The bike frame is suitable for women from 5 to 6 feet tall.
  • The bike comes in 11 different colors to match your unique aesthetic.
  • It offers 3 different speed options, (1-3-7) that can make it easier to cycle on various terrains.

What I Love About It: When it comes to cycling, I care about comfort, so I truly appreciate the oversized seat with the dual springs on this bike.

What I Wish It Had: If you’ve never owned a bike then assembling this Firmstrong model might be difficult. You should take it to a bike shop to get it assembled professionally with the right adjustments instead.

This Firsmstong model has won the number one spot on this list not only because it is designed to accommodate the female figure, but because this is a durable bike, and the steel frame can easily carry a heavy rider with its 350 weight capacity.

Additionally, the handlebar is slightly far apart which can also be a great bonus for women with broad shoulders or a large chest who need that extra breathing space to be more comfortable.

The 26-inch wheels are also a great size because they can hold more weight and with over 32 spokes and an alloy rim, you can expect a balanced and most importantly safe ride.

I also made sure to have a number one bike that can accommodate women of different heights, specifically shorter women like myself.

I must say though the bike weighs around 36 pounds so it might be a bit heavy and large, especially for a rider that is not used to carrying weights.

This cruiser bike is ideal for city riding, but it can also serve you well on light trail excursions and dirt rides. However, since this bike is quite heavy it’s best to avoid high hills and extremely uneven ground.

The price of the bike reflects the quality and style of this beauty, so if you want to learn more about it you can check it out on Amazon.

  • The recommended weight limit is 440 lbs, so it’s perfect for anyone who falls in between to ride this bike confidently.
  • This bike can accommodate women that are 5.2 to 6 feet tall.
  • The thick tires can handle any type of terrain under any weather, so you can take it anywhere.
  • The affordable price makes this a great bike for beginners.

What I Love About It: The fat tires on this bike have been manufactured with anti-slip technology and are 5 times more wear-resistant than regular tires, so you can safely ride your bike on loose grounds like the beach or even on snow.

What I Wish It Had: According to some reviewers you might experience poor customer service.

As I’ve said before, women come in all shapes and sizes and no matter how plus-size you are you deserve a bike that can take you on wild trips without compromising your safety.

That’s where the Max4out bike comes in because this is a true beast of a bike.

The carbon steel frame is durable enough to withstand long-term wear and tears whether you’re cycling on winding dirt trails or rocky hills.

The front suspension also helps the bike absorb any shock from the weight of the rider and the impact created when riding on uneven bumpy terrain.

You can also safely rely on the front and rear double disc brakes that can stop at any given moment with one simple movement of your fingers.

So, whether you’re a big girl that requires a sturdy ride or someone who tends to carry heavy cargo on her bike, make sure to check the Max4out bike on Amazon as well as today’s price!

3. Best Electric Bike For Plus Size Women: Addmotor Electric Fat Tire Bike

  • The bike is 85% assembled, so you only need to attach the front wheel, handlebar, seat, and pedals with the toolbox that’s included.
  • It comes in 4 different colors to match your own style.

What I Love About It: E-bikes, especially fat-tire e-bikes can be ginormous, but this Addmotor model is great for shorter plus-size women and people in general.

What I Wish It Had: Since e-bikes are all about comfort, I think you should change the seat with one that’s bigger and has more cushion.

This isn’t just an e-bike, but according to one reviewer, this is a dream bike to have.

So, let’s start with the aluminum frame, not only is it strong enough to hold a heavy rider, but it is also step-thru which means you can easily put your leg over the lowered top tube.

This is a great feature for women with movement difficulties, as well as for those of you who carry extra weight and haven’t strengthened your muscles yet.

The fat tires as you can imagine are also great for handling heavy loads, and for keeping the rider balanced on various terrains, and you don’t have to feel the bumps if you decide to cycle off-road.

The sweptback handlebar and the cruiser-style frame are going to keep your body properly aligned to avoid soreness even after a long journey.

Now when it comes to the electric side of your bike, this vehicle has a super quiet 750w motor that is powered by a lithium removable battery that has over 800 lifetimes of battery charges.

It also only takes 6-7 hours to fully charge the battery and on a full charge, it can last you for 55-65 miles with a speed 1 pedal assist.

Which is great news for all the plus-size ladies that want to ease themselves into a more active lifestyle.

  • It’s suitable for female riders 5.2 to 7 feet tall.
  • Sensitive 21-speed gears that you can swiftly switch depending on the terrain.
  • The budget-friendly price makes it a great beginner’s bike.
  • The bike is 80% assembled so it’s easy to assemble without professional help.

What I Love About It: If you don’t want to cycle on a standard black bike then you’ll be happy to hear that this bike comes in various different colors.

more so, the manufacturer offers two different bike models with 3-spoked wheels and tires that can handle highway roads.

What I Wish It Had: This bike could definitely use a more comfortable saddle, but fortunately it’s reasonably priced so getting a more comfortable seat shouldn’t be a big issue.

This Outroad model is a unisex bike that is designed to be just as comfortable for women as it is for male riders.

More so, it’s a durable bike that has a lightweight aluminum frame that is suitable for average and very tall plus-size women.

The 27.5-inch wheels will help you achieve high speed on difficult terrains thanks to the anti-skid patterns on the tire surface and their shock absorption properties make up for a comfortable cycling experience even if you carry additional weight.

If you’re seeking stability while you ride on bumpy roads and mountain sites, then you’ll be happy to hear that this bike has a front fork suspension that does just that.

More so, one of the key elements that make a mountain bike good is quick adaptability to the surrounding environment.

That’s why I’m so impressed with this Outroad bike and the reliable disc brakes that can stop at any given speed and moment.

5. Best Road Bike For Plus Size Women: Schwinn Fastback Al Claris Adult Performance Road Bike

Schwinn Fastback AL Claris Adult Performance Road Bike, Beginner to Intermediate Bicycle Riders,...
  • Schwinn bikes can hold weights of approximately 300 lbs.
  • The bike offers a multitude of sizes from extra-small to extra-large (4.1 to 6.4 feet tall.)
  • The bike is 18.8-22.9 lbs heavy so it’s easy to handle regardless of your physical prowess.
  • This road bike comes in 3 different styles to suit your taste.

What I Love About It:  The bike itself is very durable, and it’s pretty much all made out of aluminum parts. Starting with the triple-butted aluminum frame, you can also see that the sturdiness of this bike should be attributed to the aluminum double-wall rims and road hubs of the 29-inch wheels.

What I Wish It Had: Some reviewers state that the instructions are pretty straightforward while others recommend having a mechanic put the bike together and adjust it to suit your needs.

Road bikes are no joke when it comes to cycling. They are designed to be ridden fast on smooth pavement, and on-road racing.

That’s why I chose the Schwinn Fastback model because it’s meant for beginners to intermediate riders so it’s a great bicycle for plus-size women that are looking to get back into riding.

Road bikes are also great if you’re afraid of the pedaling process since they are built for speed and are easy to pedal on even surfaces.

However, if you want to ride a road bike causally you may find the “dropped” riding position difficult to maintain for a long time.

When it comes to gears, this model has 16 speeds that help you effortlessly ride on paved roads and even climb hills, but if you’re an experienced triathlon cyclist then a 21-speed road bike would be a better choice instead.

You can get more details about the Schwinn road bike and see today’s price on Amazon here.

Hiland Aluminum Mountain Bike for Women,Lock-Out Suspension Fork, 21 Speeds,26/27.5 Wheel Inch with...
  • The recommended Female Rider Weight is 275 lbs.
  • The bike is suitable for riders from 5.1 to 6.1 feet tall.
  • The wide range of gears on this 21/24 speed bike gives you more control on difficult terrains.
  • There are 6 different colors to choose from white, purple, mint green, or the combination of the above.
  • The price is budget-friendly so it’s a great bike for novice cyclists.

What I Love About It: Bicycle tires receive a great deal of pressure both when carrying a heavy rider and when riding on uneven ground, but you can rely on the Hiland mountain bike tires since they’re explosion-proof and puncture-resistant.

What I Wish It Had: Some customers have complained about the customer service stating that they can be difficult to deal with.

Riding off-road can be intimidating, but I’m sure my fellow plus-sized ladies would love to explore a wild terrain outside of the hustle and bustle of their busy city.

With a good mountain bike, like this Hiland model that’s designed to accommodate the female body you can go on any adventure even if you’re still a novice cyclist.

Let’s start with the aluminum frame first. Not only is it super resilient, but the lowered top tube makes saddling much easier, which can be a struggle for short or heavy riders that might not be as flexible.

Riding on unpredictable and rough terrain also means that you need a bike with incredible stopping power.

That’s why I made sure to have a mountain bike that is equipped with mechanical disc brakes. These are more durable, they’ll react swiftly to your commands and they are easy to replace when needed.

If you’re afraid that the bike will break apart under your weight then you should simply trust the front suspension which will absorb any bumps you’ll meet ahead of you.

Then again if you’re riding on a smooth road you can lock the suspension which will make pedaling easier and more efficient.

If that sounds like a good deal to you then click here to check out today’s price on Amazon.

7. Best Hybrid For Plus Size Women: Schwinn Wayfarer Women’s Hybrid Bike

Schwinn Wayfarer Adult Bike Hybrid Retro-Styled Cruiser, 16-Inch/Small Steel Step-Through Frame,...

  • This bike is perfect for riders from 5.4 to 6.2 feet tall.
  • The 7-speed twist shifter helps you change gears to suit most road conditions.
  • The manufacturer offers a limited lifetime warranty in case some parts are defective and need replacement.

What I Love About It: This hybrid bike is quite affordable and can be a great budget-friendly investment for riders that are looking to get back into cycling.

What I Wish It Had: The height range is not as diverse as I’d like it to be, so it might not work for very short women.

This is a truly beautiful retro-looking bike that will make cycling a carefree affair no matter where you are.

This bike is a great choice if you don’t want to be stuck with a road bike that can only go on paved roads, or a mountain bike that is most suitable for rough terrains.

The frame itself is made of steel so it’s very sturdy, something a full-figured lady will appreciate.

The 28-inch wheels are a bit bigger than I’d like them to be, but despite that you can still expect a balanced riding experience and the fenders will minimize any splashes on a rainy day, making it an all-year-round vehicle.

This Schwinn hybrid model has front and rear alloy linear-pull brakes that provide excellent stopping power, and they require the lowest maintenance.

I also want to mention the swept-back handlebars that are truly the epitome of a comfortable ride. being able to sit upright on this hybrid bike means that you won’t end up with a sore back as you would with most road bikes.

The top tube is also lowered so it makes getting on and off the bike an easy endeavor, especially for plus-size women, as well as older women.

If you want to know what a smooth riding experience feels like then check out this bike and today’s price on Amazon.

  • There are 1/2/7/21 Speed bicycles to choose from that can work for short or long distances on flat terrain or uphill climbs.
  • The bike comes in 21 different colors to match your unique style.

What I Love About It: The bike has a rear rack that you can use to carry your essentials, whether you’re planning a picnic at the park or you want to bring your heavy raincoat just in case.

What I Wish It Had: Some customers have suggested that as a cruiser bike it would be a great plus if it came with a basket and a bell.

If you’re looking for a cruiser bike that is women-specific, plus-size inclusive, and perfect for short ladies, then this Sixththreezero model is the perfect choice for you.

You can trust that the steel frame can hold your weight, or additional cargo without taking away from the comfort and stability a cycling experience should offer.

More so, the structure of the bike itself is built in a way that keeps your body properly aligned and the pedal position should give you a full leg extension.

This way even after a long ride you won’t experience back soreness as well as soreness in your hips, knees, and ankles the areas that plus-size women usually would.

The swept-back handlebars should also keep your wrists in a comfortable position, and the front and rear brakes are easy to reach as well as the gear switch.

As most cruisers are designed for casual cycling, the manufacturer made sure to include a chain guard to protect your clothes from getting caught, especially if you’re wearing something cute while cycling in the city.

  • This is a lightweight bike and at 26 lbs it is easy to handle.
  • The bike arrives 90% assembled so you can easily set up the bicycle yourself.
  • It comes in 9 unique colors to help you stand out in the most fashionable way.

What I Love About It: The double-walled rims come in two different colors, which will make the 28-inch wheels pop against the city background.

But don’t be fooled, these wheels are also strong enough to carry a large lady.

What I Wish It Had: You can only adjust the height of the neck with a stem raiser which isn’t included in the toolbox, so you might want to take this bike to the mechanic for adjustments.

For those of you who keep searching for a bike with a unique style to ride around the city the Solé bicycle is exactly what you need.

But this bike made it on this list not just for its looks, but because it makes cycling a safe activity.

Even though this model is lightweight it still manages to have a steel frame, a material that is known for being extra sturdy, so, it’s capable of carrying a heavy rider.

Instead of complicating things, this bike has single-speed gear and fixed gear which is ideal when you’re commuting from your house to your work or having a weekend of chill cycling at the park or the seaside.

Basically, the flip-flop hub gives you more control over your pedaling and the bike itself which is crucial when you’re cycling in a city full of cars.

While I know this is another cruiser bike that is meant for casual in-city cycling, I really think that this high-quality folding bike is unique enough to have a spot on this list.

What Should Women Look For In A Plus Size-Friendly Bike?

The answer to this question might seem obvious but getting a better understanding of what makes a bike plus-size friendly can help you choose the right bicycle for you.

Durability

How well a bike can handle heavy loads depends on the materials that were used to build the bike.

For me getting a bike made out of a steel frame is a priority because steel is very resilient and can absorb more blows, that’s why you’ll notice that most mountain bikes have steel frames.

Aluminum is another good option and while it’s not as strong as steel, it’s still quite resilient and it’s lightweight so it will be easier to handle if you’re not physically strong.

I’d avoid carbon and titanium frames because the former is a lighter material and won’t be able to hold a heavy rider, while the latter is also not as reliable, and a titanium frame is more likely to break because of defective materials.

I also gravitate towards thicker bike frames, because not only can they safely handle my own weight, but they tend to be long-lasting.

Comfort

Another important component of active cycling is comfort. Not only will you be more inclined to get on a comfortable bike, but you can cycle for long hours without the risk of injuries or stressing your body in any way.

The frame style, how wide the seat is, and how thick are the tires are some of the features that will determine the comfortability of your future bike.

More so, if you plan on riding the bike off-road then you’ll need a bike with a suspension that can absorb the shock that is caused by the rough terrain and the additional weight.

For novice cyclists, it might be more beneficial to look for an easy-to-use bicycle. This includes technical aspects of the bike like the gears.

Balance

Bicycles that are manufactured with heavy people in mind have certain components that will help you feel more confident when riding and that includes your balance.

The thickness of the bike’s tires, well-adjusted handlebars, and saddle as well as the overall size of the bike can have a positive or negative effect on how well you can balance while cycling.

I can be quite clumsy and that I have to admit is mostly part of my personality trait, but carrying extra weight can also have a certain effect on my speed and movements.

So, a bike that can handle my personality and my full figure will also keep me from wobbling as I pedal on both uneven and even terrain.

Do You Need A Woman’s Bike?

First of all, I want to make it clear that a woman’s bike isn’t simply a male bike but smaller and pinker. Instead, a women-specific bike is designed to accommodate the average woman.

Of course, women are a diverse group and we come in all shapes and sizes, with different needs and these can be covered either by male or women-specific bikes.

I’m personally quite short, so a male-specific bike doesn’t suit my dimensions.

If you’re also on the shorter spectrum then with a woman’s bike you’re less likely to spend more money on additional products or adjustments to achieve the perfect fit.

But I’ve got female friends that are plus-size and tall so they prefer male-oriented bikes specifically because they need a larger bike frame and wider handlebars.

At the end of the day choosing between a woman’s bike and a male’s bike is up to the rider.

In fact, many brands prefer to advertise their bikes as unisex and they simply offer a wider size selection.

Of course, no matter what type of bike you go for, you need to find the one that works for you and your body. A bike that you’ll be happy to ride as often as possible.

What’s The Difference Between Women’s And Men’s Plus Size Bikes?

As we’ve already established you don’t have to choose a women’s plus-size bike, and you may find that many bike brands call their bikes ‘unisex’ instead.

But there are still brands that try to be more specific to their buyer’s needs and women-specific bikes, specifically the different contact points on these bikes like the saddle, and handlebar will be more female-friendly.

So, before you make your final bike purchase, you might want to look at some of the possible perks that women-specific bicycles might have.

A Better Fit

While women come in a multitude of different shapes and sizes, we tend to be shorter compared to men. That’s why women’s bikes tend to have smaller frames and weigh less.

Certain bike types will have a lowered top tube, like hybrid or commuter bikes which make it easier to get on and off.

This is great news for small women, but as plus-size women, we have to look for bikes that not only have a wide size range for shorter women, but that can also carry our weight.

So, women’s bikes with a wider choice in weight capacity should actually be your goal.

Female-specific Features

As you can imagine brands that claim to have women-specific bikes should have a handlebar that is the right width and in the right position.

Women tend to have narrow shoulders compared to men, so women’s bikes will usually have a narrower handlebar. Additionally, they offer a shorter reach from the seat to the bar, so you won’t have to strain your hands and back.

Try to go for a bike that comes with an adjustable seat and handlebar. Perhaps you’re short but maybe you have longer legs or arms, and having that extra wiggle room can affect how well the bike fits you.

The brakes on a women-specific bike are usually much easier to reach without having to stretch your hand too much, which can give you better control of your bike.

Similarly, the saddle and the frame’s length are usually designed to make pedaling more efficient for women. Plus women’s bikes tend to have more comfortable saddles that work best for our anatomy.

Lighter Suspension

If you’re going for any type of bike with a suspension, like a mountain bike or a hybrid bike, then a women-oriented model will usually have a suspension that is designed for lighter riders and this can be a plus or a minus depending on your weight.

Of course, bikes that are designed for heavy men will have more heavy-duty suspensions, and bikes designed for fat women should also be resilient enough, but they might still be lighter and offer a smoother riding experience.

What Size Bike Do Plus-Size Women Need?

Most bike manufacturing companies don’t follow the same standard for sizing their bikes, and this can complicate things as you try to search for a bicycle that meets your body size and weight.

Similarly, various bike models will have different dimensions, road bikes, and cruiser bikes are built with certain goals in mind because they offer a different riding experience.

So, it’s understandable that any person can find it difficult to get a bike that fits them, but when you’re a plus-size woman this struggle is even more real.

After all, you can be short and overweight, so not only are you supposed to find a small-sized bike, but also one that can carry heavier loads.

However, all hope is not lost!

What determines the size of a bike is usually the size of the frame, and it’s usually listed in inches, centimeters or simply as small, medium, large, and all the possible in-betweens.

No matter what configuration is used you can always rely on a good conversion app to help you during your bike research.

It’s also important to mention that different manufacturers will have their own size guides for each bike model, and you’ll need to use your own height to determine which bike will fit you.

So, make sure you know exactly how tall you are and use the right metric that you will apply to the sizing chart of the bike of your choice.

If you fall in between sizes you could try both bikes if that’s possible. Usually, when a size overlap happens it means that both sizes could fit you. But if you don’t want to risk it then you could take a different approach.

For those of you whose arm span is longer than your height, a bigger frame will suit you better because there’s a greater distance between the handlebars and the seat.

On the other hand, if your arm span is shorter then a smaller bike should work better for you.

When it comes to smaller-sized bike frames, women’s bikes tend to have a more diverse size range, and that is something that can work for short plus size women. But if you’re really tall and overweight you might want to look for unisex or male bikes instead.

How Can You Make Your Bike Fit Better?

Whether you ended up in between sizes or your anatomy is too unique for a regular bike, you could look into a bike fit service from your local bike shop.

A bike mechanic will be able to fine-tune the fit to ensure that your two-wheel vehicle is comfortable and efficient.

They might have to change a few things, like the handlebars or the stem to make sure the fit is actually personalized. But this professional tweaking costs additional money, and if you’re on a tight budget then this approach might not work for you.

This doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do or that you’ll be stuck with a bike that is just not good enough.

You can still look for a saddle that meets your needs, or a wider/narrower handlebar and you can customize your bike according to your body anatomy.

My biggest issue with bike saddles is the width, so I try to look for one that can accommodate my voluptuous behind in the most comfortable way.

I personally love the YLG Oversized Comfort Bike Seat because it’s the comfiest plus-size seat my big butt has ever experienced!

Not only is the saddle soft thanks to the thick foam padding but it’s also waterproof. So, if you’re interested you can check it out on Amazon by clicking here!

I also want to share the best advice my bike mechanic gave me when I told them I was frustrated with my bike because it didn’t fit me as well as I wanted it to.

They told me that the trick is to adjust the fit by tweaking what you already have first before making any serious changes, this includes the height of the handlebars, and the saddle, in some cases you can even tilt them forward or backward for a better fit.

Adjusting the reach of your brakes can also make a huge difference in the control you have when riding your bike.

Finally, knowing what you need your bike for can also help you get the best fit. If you want to ride off-road then a mountain bike is the way to go, but if you want to ride both on even and uneven terrain then a hybrid or a fat tire bike is the way to go.

Because if you’re riding a cruiser bike on extra bumpy ground, or a mountain bike on a city road then the whole experience will feel out of place.

Closing Thoughts

When you’ve been stuck in a vicious cycle of shame getting out and reclaiming space in the world of sport or any type of activity can be intimidating, to say the least.

I know this because I’ve been there, but what helped me get out of that dark place, was my bike.

You might think that this journey began the moment I started pedaling, but my first struggle was to find a plus-size friendly bike that would give me the confidence to ride it, and my first accomplishment was when I found it.

So, if you’re in a similar space, or even if you’re a regular plus-sized cyclist struggling to find her perfect bike, I truly hope this list can help you find what you’re looking for!
