When I play golf I want my club to swing, not my stomach! As a bigger guy, I need a shirt that is long enough to cover my big belly and provide me with enough room to be comfortable making a full swing with my golf clubs. 

I actually like the look and feel of golf shirts for everyday use, and sometimes I enjoy wearing them for work or around the house. 

A nice fitting golf shirt can be a great thing to wear to the office or a gathering with friends so it has a lot more uses than just the golf course. 

But if it is too tight or too short, you won’t want to wear it anywhere because it can make you look like you pulled something out from your little brother’s closet!

What Should Big Dudes Look For In A Golf Shirt?

When you are in the market to buy a golf shirt, you will want to make sure that it is comfortable and fits in all the right places!

Here are the main things to take into consideration when you are looking for a comfortable golf shirt.

Length

As a big guy myself, I know that length is one of the top things I look for because I don’t like it when my stomach hangs below the shirt. I want a shirt that can conceal my stomach but not look like I am wearing a dress.

The shirt doesn’t necessarily need to be long enough for me to tuck in, but it definitely needs to be long enough to cover my belly when I swing a golf club! 

If you’re big and also tall, look for accommodating brands that offer tall sizing options that fit guys over 6 feet, these shirts will be longer.

Material

Whether I am wearing my golf shirt to golf in the sun or out with friends, I want to make sure the material of the shirt is comfortable and breathable.

Golf shirts are typically made with moisture-wicking material that helps pull sweat away from the body without soaking it up and leaving me looking like a wet dog! 

All the shirts we chose for our list of recommendations are fully or partially made with moisture-wicking material, such as polyester. No big guy needs an unbreathable golf shirt! So we definitely won’t recommend one!

Fit

Golf shirts can be flattering for big guys, but not so much if the fit isn’t right. There are a few fits when it comes to golf shirts. Slim fit, regular fit, and fitted are the most common fits.

Big guys will not want to go with a slim-fit shirt because it will hug their belly and not fit comfortably. We will also want to stay away from fitted shirts because they are similar to slim-fit shirts, they also run shorter in the abdomen. 

The safest fit for a big guy is a regular fit or a big and tall size if it’s available. The waist isn’t tapered or narrow, and it fits a stockier build. The arms are wider and longer to help accommodate bigger arms. And they provide comfort and coverage for bigger bodies.

Sleeves

To wear sleeves, or not to wear sleeves? That is the question. I wonder what type of golf shirt Shakespeare would have chosen!

Golf shirts can have short or long sleeves. If you sweat a lot, you may not want a golf shirt that covers the full length of your arms, especially in the sun. But if you are playing golf in the cooler months or are wearing it for leisure, a long sleeve golf shirt may be what you are looking for! 

Anti Odor Protection

Golf shirts have come a long way in the past decade! Some golf shirts offer anti-odor protection! These shirts contain nanoparticles made from silver or antimicrobial chemicals that are embedded into the shirt and help weaken or kill the bacteria that cause odor!

This is a great additive to shirts for big guys who have a musky odor due to the mixture of their sweat and skin bacteria. Because trust me, if you spend hours out on the course in the sunshine like I do, you are going to sweat some!

What Is The Difference Between A Golf Shirt and A Polo Shirt?

Many people don’t know that there is a difference between golf shirts and polo shirts. They look similar and are available in similar styles. But there are a few key differences between the two shirts.

A golf shirt should fit a little looser than a polo. It’s intended to be worn while playing golf, so having the flexibility to do a full swing is needed while wearing this type of shirt. The chest and armholes on a golf shirt will be a little less restricting than a polo shirt. 

Golf shirts are usually made from moisture-wicking fabric such as polyester, which helps keep you cool while being out in the sun or being active. This makes them ideal for the outdoors. While a polo shirt is made with pique knit material such as cotton, wool, or a blend of materials. Pique knit is double knitted and very absorbent, which is not ideal for big guys who sweat a lot. 

The collar of a golf shirt is also different than the collar of a standard polo shirt! 

Golf shirts have collars that are double stitched. They also fold down or lay flat. A polo shirt will have a knitted collar that can be stood up for sun protection or for stylish reasons. 

Sleeve length is the final variation that we will discuss when comparing the two types of shirts. Golf shirt sleeves will be a few centimeters longer than a polo shirt. The extra length on golf shirt sleeves helps you swing a golf club without your bicep feeling too restricted.

What Size Should I Buy?

No two brands size their shirts exactly the same. Being aware of this will help when you are choosing the right size for each brand. Some brands use something called vanity sizing to encourage people to buy their brand over others.

They will size the shirt lower, with the same measurements as a larger size in another brand. For example, you can have two brands of shirts, both measure the same size in inches, but one is sized a 3XL while the other is a 4XL. The brand using the 3XL is using vanity sizing to make the buyer feel like they wear a smaller size.

When buying a golf shirt, you will want to buy based on the measurements of the shirt, not the size itself. Since you can’t always trust sizes, find the measurements of the shirt and compare them to your measurements. Especially, when buying a golf shirt online. 

If you have a shirt that fits you perfectly, you can also compare the measurements of that shirt to the measurements of the new shirt!

How many of you big guys like myself need a chest pocket on your golf shirt to keep your sweat rag while golfing! The summer sun can be unforgiving, and I’m not trying to get sweat in my eyes when teeing off!
