I know you guys get what I mean when I say sometimes, getting dressed is just no fun. Do you have a bigger frame but aren’t sure how to dress it?
Yep, been there.
And if you’re like I used to be, I bet you sort of just default to “the baggier the better” look. I used to be the king of covering up my body with baggy shirts and loose-fitting pants.
You might think the only options out there in husky fashion are boring and baggy but that is certainly not the case anymore.
Now, more than ever, brands are embracing customers of all shapes and sizes. We have choices now!
We can look just as fashionable as anyone else, but it still takes some careful thought and planning. You aren’t magically going to look perfect in everything you try on, but with these tips, you will select the right items more and more frequently. That will build your confidence and, ultimately, lead to unleashing your inner male fashionista (or should I say, fashionista?).
It’s important to understand the basics when it comes to dressing well. You’re not alone in the quest for dope clothes to adorn your fat self and big body. Aside from the number of regular ole Americans who are fat guys, look at all the big, tall, and fat celebrities that are always stylish – DJ Khaled, Vince Vaughn, and James Corden are all great examples.
These guys are large and in charge, yet are always dressed to the nines. Do they have some superpower that you don’t? Do they have clothes made by fairies?
True, they probably do have professional stylists and an army of people who are devoted to making them look their best, but by finding this list, so do you! As fat dudes, we can still work the same on-trend options that everyone else can, we just have to remember to do it in a way that is specifically flattering to fat guys. Wearing the right clothes will make you feel both confident and comfortable.
Lucky for you, I’ve been dressing as a hefty man for a while now, so I know what works. I’ve rounded up the 10 key pieces you NEED in your closet. When it comes to selecting the right pieces for your wardrobe, there are a few things to remember. Make sure you focus on the fit, colors, angles, fabrics, and accessories.
If you need my #1 recommendation fast, I’ll go ahead and give you the spoiler. My top recommendation when it comes to casual clothes for big guys is the DXL Big & Tall Straight-Fit Waist-Relaxer Stretch Twill Pants which you can see on Amazon by clicking here. These pants are made by heavy guys, for heavy guys. They fit right, come in flattering colors, adapt to your movement, and are made of a breathable fabric.

A Big, Fat or Heavy Guy’s Guide to Trendy Casual Fashion
Focus on the fit of your clothes, not the size
There is a difference between “size” and “fit.” You might think they are synonyms, but you would be mistaken. The two are distinctly different!
Let’s start with what the size really is.
Size is the number (or letter if the store is funky) on the tag of a garment. It is just a category that that particular brand uses to differentiate clothing of the same type, but with different measurements.
So essentially, the size is really just an arbitrary number. Sizes are not standardized, which is why there is so much variation among brands.
In fact, some stores are purposefully misleading when it comes to their sizing! Some critics call it “vanity” or even “insanity” sizing.
For example, a store might take their usual size 38 and relabel everything across the entire brand so that the old 38 is now a size 34. Some critics blame this on the store’s profit-hungry analysts trying to flatter people into preferring their brand over others.
Whatever the reason, can we all just agree it is so confusing?! At one store, you might be a completely different size than at another store.
This is why you should always go by your body measurements. If you are shopping in a physical store, you have the option of trying on multiple sizes.
But if you are ordering online, pay close attention to the specific brand’s size chart and measurements. This will help you pick the best size.
Now, the fit is even more important to focus on. Fit has to do with how the clothes hang on your body.
It has nothing to do with what the number on the tag says.
I already warned you against defaulting to dressing in burlap sacks. Resist the urge to hide your body under baggy clothes that are much too big for your frame.
Dressing that way will just add extra bulk (on top of what we have naturally) and actually makes you look even bigger than you are.
Plus, baggy clothes can make you look like a slob. Take some pride in your appearance. Don’t let anyone make you feel like you need to cover up. Us big dudes gotta stick together!
That doesn’t mean you should wear outfits that are way too tight either. I don’t think I’ll shock anybody by saying that is a big no-no.
The stuffed sausage look is not great for anyone and it is so uncomfortable to be in all day long!
Wondering how you can do this online? Easy, check the reviews, read the sizing guide, and if it doesn’t fit you can always do an exchange. Way less hassle than going to the store.
Solid Colors Look Great On Big Bodies
Sticking to a solid color palette keeps your body in a uniform tone without accentuating the parts of you that you’d rather keep to yourself.
To most of us, that means sticking to a dark color. Dark colors can be more slimming, but that doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to consist solely of black- or that you have to avoid stripes.
Don’t be afraid to add pops of color. As long as you focus on adding one bright color at a time, you will still look great.
You might find yourself in dangerous territory if you start dressing in all the colors of the rainbow at once. Better to follow a “less is more” approach.
Oh, and for the love of all that is good, be careful with white! See-through colors and materials are not your friends.
Just trust me on that one. Been there. Done that.
Work Your Angles
Fashion is all about flattering the unique shape you have.
How do you achieve that?
By working your angles, baby!
And if you don’t have angles, make them. Visual tricks are your friend.
Here’s a secret – everyone uses them! That’s right, people of all shapes and sizes focus on working their angles. So, don’t be fooled into thinking that seemingly perfect guy at the gym doesn’t use this trick, too.
After all, he spends enough time staring at his reflection to know a thing or two about his own body and how to bring out its best qualities. Why shouldn’t you? It’s all about creating tricks for the eye.
I’ll let you in on a few of my favorite ones.
Tucking Your Shirt in Can Give Big Bodies More Shape
I wore a uniform as a kid and the one thing I remember was my fourth-grade teacher squawking about shirt tails. She always made us tuck in our shirts. As a kid, I hated it.
But now, it is one of my favorite flattering clothing tricks.
When you tuck in your shirt, you’ll not only look more polished, but you will also look slimmer. A tucked-in shirt defines and emphasizes your waist.
Even if you don’t have much of a natural waist, tucking your shirt in will help create the illusion of one.
Consider Adding In A Belt or Casual Suspenders
Besides being useful to keep your pants up, belts and suspenders can be a great slimming accessory.
Both will add interest and definition but in two very different ways.
A belt will assist the shirt tuck in defining your waist which can give you an overall more polished look.
Suspenders are not near as common as belts. They’ve fallen to the wayside in the latter part of the 20th century and early 21st century, but I see them making a serious comeback and they’re definitely becoming more trendy as move into 2022.
Suspenders go a step further than traditional belts because the vertical line literally elongates you. Your eye will follow the suspenders up and down, creating a more linear feel to your stature which can make you appear taller. Suspenders are also great for big guys because they have you from having to deal with the hassle of a belt digging into your belly.
Can Big, Fat & Tall Guys Wear V-Necks?
V-neck shirts or open-collared styles will give your face and neck more room so that you can avoid the floating head debacle.
Additionally, they create a nice reverse triangle effect. When the long point of the triangle is facing toward the floor, it gives the allusion that your face and neck are longer which can be a good look for some folks.
Still, you don’t want to go too deep with the v-neck and as a general rule of thumb, we suggest that big guys avoid v-necks that are deeper than 3 inches.
How to Work Jackets Into Your Casual Fashion
Layering can be tricky. If you add too much, you will look bulky.
But if you add the right amount, layers can break up an outfit help you hit a new level of casual fashion.
As heavy guys, most of us have a gut. Whether that’s from one too many beers or fully embracing our dad bod, it’s not something I love to show off.
I’m not ashamed of it by any means, but sometimes it is just a little bit too prominent.
One of the best ways I’ve found to disguise the gut is to wear a tailored blazer. You can throw a blazer on over a nice polo, button-down dress shirt, or any other style to add instant sophistication to your outfit.
The loose-fitting sides glide over the belly, hiding the bulge from too much hanging over.
Cuff Long Sleeves Look Great For Big Guys
Like I keep saying, fashion is about creating angles and it’s no different for big guys. Rolling up your sleeves slightly shows off your forearms which are almost always a masculine and flattering feature, while still working to draw the eye upward.
Focus on cuffing the sleeve about halfway up your forearm. Don’t go as high as the elbow.
And as a tip, always unbutton the cuffs of the shirt before attempting to roll. If you forget this crucial first step, good luck getting the cuff to roll at all.
Spread Collars for Broad Features
The “spread” of a collar is the distance between a dress shirt’s collar points. The collar points are the triangle sides that stick out and face toward the floor.
Shirts with widely spread collar points help us because they balance out our broader faces and necks.
Your best bet is to wear shirts that give you a collar spread wider than a right angle. When you look at where the collar points met at the top button and form an angle, that angle should be greater than 90 degrees.
Slim-style shirts are pretty popular right now, but narrow collars tend to look out of proportion with our broad features.
If you choose to wear a narrow collar, your face and neck will look wider than they really are.
Fabric Choice Matters (Especially for Big Guys)
First, a lot of heavy guys naturally run warmer. That’s because excess fat traps heat and raises our body’s core temperature. This contributes to the reason a lot of us sweat more, too.
Because of these realities, I stay away from thick fabrics. If it’s cold out, I prefer to layer multiple thinner fabrics.
I mean, honestly…does anyone actually look good in a huge wool sweater? They do the warming job, but not the slimming job. Especially for bigger dudes, the excess bulk is not welcome.
Stick to light and medium-weight fabrics that avoid adding extra fluff. Cargo pants, hoodies, and cozy sweaters make us look bigger. Cotton, linen, and other light, natural fabrics are very good choices.
Plus, for those of us who do sweat a lot, the natural fabrics will help cool you down and prevent those unsightly sweat stains.
Accessorize the Right Way
Accessories can make or break an outfit, even when it comes to casual fashion for bigger guys.
The easiest rule is to choose large, but simple pieces. That goes for watches, tie clips, rings, earrings, etc.
For example, a giant watch on a thin wrist just looks plain silly. But a big watch on a wrist like ours looks just fine – because it fits. If your accessories are too small, they will draw attention and won’t do you any favors.
When it comes to ties, go for both wider styles and wider knots since your body can accommodate the look. Similar to the watch example, a skinny tie is going to look out of place on your frame.
Don’t be fooled into thinking a longer, skinnier tie will elongate you. In reality, it will just make the rest of you look bigger (since we aren’t skinny like the tie itself).
Another tip is to use a briefcase or backpack to carry your belongings. I know, I know, you may not want to be accused of carrying a “murse,” but trust me on this one.
Squeezing all your necessities, like your phone, wallet, and keys, into your pockets adds extra bulge and bulk.
Remember, we are focused on creating a streamlined look for the eye and there is nothing streamlined about a big lump in your back pocket.

- With the benefit of added stretch, this straight-fit style is designed to move with you
- High-comfort pants that don't look bulky
- Comfort waistband stretches up to 4"
Oak Hill is DXL’s private label especially created for big and tall customers. It has been around since 1972 for a reason.
Their pants fit like a glove because they are made with big guys like us in mind. At Oak Hill, you don’t just have to buy a big size in an item that was meant for a differently shaped body. You can rest easy knowing the styles think of us first, and everybody else second.
One of the most important benefits is the stretch you will get with these pants. Not only are they made from an overall more flexible fabric but there is also even more added stretch in the key spots where we need it most. These pants are designed to move with you.
They fit great and are generous in the leg openings without being too baggy.
The comfort waistband stretches up to 4 inches. Hello buffet! No more unbuttoning your pants after a long meal – these can expand to fit that extra helping of dessert.

Best Trendy Shorts for Big Guys: Docker’s Perfect Short

While shorts are not typically the first clothing item a fat man thinks of, these shorts really are that good. For a guy who used to shy away from shorts, it’s just as crazy to me that I love these so much. They even snagged the number one spot on our list of the best shorts for big guys which you can see here.
Both the black and navy styles are dark and solid, giving you a nice, streamlined look that easily pairs with any kind of top. Try throwing on a polo or t-shirt for a day outside, or a nicer button-down for a summer dinner.
Dockers shorts always seem to hit at the perfect angle. If your shorts are too long, your legs will look too short and disproportionate to the rest of your body. And if the shorts are too short, well, we know that doesn’t look good…
These hit at the perfect length. They are just above the knee and if you are on the short side, you can easily tailor them to the perfect length for your height.

Finding the right jacket can be tough for big guys like us. You don’t want to add too much bulk, but when it’s cold, you need a trusty jacket.
When it comes to outerwear, focus on pieces that are made of heavier, structured fabric to give you some angles without transforming you into the Michelin Man.
This soft fleece Columbia keeps you warm without adding excess material. It’s guaranteed to keep you cozy since it is crafted from super-soft polyester filament fleece.
Whether you use it as a layering piece or as your first line of defense against the cold, it allows for comfortable movement.
The jacket comes in a variety of colors, including several dark, neutral options. Some of them feature color blocking which draws attention up to your face, rather than down to your gut or legs.
The angles of the warm collar help, too. It’s made from a flexible material so you can choose to wear it up to protect your neck from the wind or wear it down.
The zippered pockets are perfectly situated to give your body a sleek vertical line. Since the zippers zip vertically, the whole look is linear and flattering.
Pay close attention to the sizing chart on this one though. I’d suggest sizing up.

The ultimate dream is to find a pair of jeans that make it feel like you’re wearing pajamas. These are the ones that suck you in in all the right places and accentuate your assets, right?!
You’ve heard the name Wrangler before. Now, you’ll be singing their praises.
These jeans truly fit like a glove. The elastic waistband means these pants will grow (or shrink) with you. Since the waist is so forgiving, even if you are between sizes, you can make these work. Elastic = comfort.
You’ll get a clean look without feeling stuffy. That’s because these jeans have a regular fit. They give you enough room without being overly baggy.
The material is also flexible enough to give you mobility without being too hot. Whether you are out on the town, hopping on a motorcycle, or just sitting around watching the game, you’ll feel comfortable.
Wrangler always uses authentic, heavy-duty hardware (for the buttons, zippers, etc.) and the finest quality denim. In fact, all Wrangler jeans come with a 1-year warranty against any factory defects.
You know you have a good pair of jeans when they come with their own warranty! I raved about this pair in my round-up of the best jeans for fat guys which you can check out here.

What I Wish They Had: I like a little bit of a higher waist but that’s a very minor issue.
Best Button-Down Shirt for Big Guys: Amazon Button-Down Slim Fit Spread Collar Pinpoint Dress Shirt
- Made in Indonesia
- Long-sleeve pinpoint oxford non-iron dress shirt featuring spread-collar, offered with or without pocket...
- Slim Fit: close Fit to the body with a slight taper from chest to waist, slimmer sleeve, and closer...
While I usually don’t advocate for anything with “slim” in the description, this shirt is an exception. Let’s not focus on the slim part. Yes, it does have a slimmer fit, but if ordered in the proper size the slim fit is not a negative factor on this particular clothing item.
It also features a tapered fit, which means it flairs out just slightly. The cut is flattering if you have a larger chest and/or belly. The tailoring and lines look crisp and professional. This makes the fit not too tight, and also not overly bulky.
It comes in so many different color options! I basically have one in each. Some are lighter for spring, while others are more appropriate for the fall and winter. When you find a piece you like, order as many as you can! Some of the styles have pockets and others do not. Pick what you feel most comfortable in.
We already talked about why a spread collar is flattering, and that is really the reason I am obsessed with this shirt. It gives our wider necks and faces the right angles to create a slimming effect.
Oh, and this shirt comes in…wait for it…44 different sizes! With that many options, you are guaranteed to find the perfect one.

What I Wish They Had: Don’t be filled by the “slim fit” description. These are ready for big, fat, and heavy guys.
Best Bathing Suit: Amazon Essentials Swim Trunks
- This trunk-style swimsuit features an elastic waistband with drawstring for a flexible yet secure fit
- Features 9" inseam, side seam pockets, and single rear pocket with hook and loop closure
- Sport made better: we listen to customer feedback and fine-tune every detail to ensure quality, fit, and...
Inevitably, you will be invited to a pool party or take a trip to the beach. Just because you’re a bigger guy does not mean you should be sidelined from the fun.
What you need is a swimsuit that makes you feel confident! This one did it for me, and it can do it for you as well.
First, the elastic waistband and drawstring give a flexible, but also secure, fit. You won’t have to worry about any wardrobe malfunctions, phew!
The great thing about these swim trunks is where they hit on the leg. Sometimes, swimsuits are so long, they look baggy and disproportional. These are the perfect medium – not too short and not too long.
The wide range of colors means you can keep it neutral, or go wild in one of the brighter styles. Usually, I stick to darker neutrals on the bottom, but with a swimsuit, why not try something more vibrant?
The fabric is moisture-wicking to keep you comfortable. Of course, you will get wet, but rather than your swim trunks soaking up water and weighing you down, they stay feeling light.
The sizing chart is accurate but only goes up to an XXL. If you’re in the triple-X range, this style may not work for you.

What I Wish They Had: Biggest size is XXL which might be a snug fit for some guys.
Best T-Shirt: King Size Shrinkless Lightweight V-Neck Pocket T-Shirt
- BIG AND TALL SIZING: You should order Tall if you are 6'2" or taller. You should order Big if you are...
- Our Lightweight V-Neck Pocket T-Shirt is perfect for big and tall guys. Plus this tee is...
- Relaxed fit . Taped neck seams
This classic V-neck t-shirt is lightweight and it won’t shrink – making it the best option in casual tops for big guys. We also saw this brand show up several times on our list of the best tank tops for fat guys and they always deliver.
The brand focuses on creating clothes for both just big as well as men who are big and tall. That’s why their sizes are all available in either just “big” or “big and tall” varieties.
With so many colors to choose from, you might as well go ahead and order the shirts in bulk. Even the brighter color options are made of durable, sturdy fabric to keep you feeling secure. No see-through problems here!
The style offers a relaxed fit with tapered seams that give additional structure. The sleeves and neck openings are extra wide which makes wearing this shirt even more comfortable. We already know how flattering a V-neck is for our frames, and this one is no exception.
The best feature is that the V-neck is slightly shorter than some others, which gives much-needed chest coverage without losing the overall effect. The lightweight fabric is shrink-resistant. You no longer have to fear the wrath of the dryer or worry about it ruining your favorite t-shirt. All in all, this is a solid piece that should be a staple in any fat guy’s wardrobe. You can dress the shirt up or down because it is very versatile.
What I Wish They Had: Some of the color options are a little bright which might not be everyone’s style. But they still have plenty to chose from.
Adding a tie can instantly make you look more polished and professional. But sometimes, finding the right one can be tricky!
A few years ago, if you asked me what the difference was between ties I would have been very confused. A tie is a tie, right? Wrong.
The two main types of ties are skinny and traditional. As large men, skinny ties are not our friends. We need wider ties to balance out our wider frames.
Calvin Klein is a reputable name in professional menswear and they make one of the best ties on the market for us bigger dudes.
I like it because of the wider style, but also because it is a little bit longer than your average tie.
The minimal patterns and dark, neutral color will streamline your look and keep you looking dapper.
Whether it is for work or for play, this tie should be your new go-to.
What I Wish They Had: This dry clean only so you better fold it over when you eat!

- KEEP YOUR PANTS UP & YOUR BELLY DOWN: Unlike belts that would tackily make your stomach hang over, these...
Suspenders are NOT just for nerds. This classic accessory is making a comeback, especially in the circles of heavy folk. Why? Because they accomplish two things at once. They hold up your pants and actually make you look thinner because of the vertical lines.
The combination of high-quality fabric and PU leather stand the test of time (and the test of our weight). Whether you are big and tall or short and fat, you can adjust the straps to meet your torso’s needs and feel comfortable all day long.
If you deal with a muffin top, suspenders keep your pants up and your belly down. They allow your pants to fit over your love handles instead of squishing everything up to the top.
Personally, I love suspenders! Unlike a belt, they don’t divide your body in two. The suspenders act like magnets for the eye – drawing it up and down to create a slimming effect. Belts can also sometimes feel suffocating, whereas suspenders have a wider adjustability range.
The fabric is soft and as long as you adjust it appropriately, it won’t dig into your shoulders.
With so many colors to choose from, you can order more than one pair, depending on what compliments your outfit.
You can click here to see the latest price on Amazon and check out more reviews.
What I Wish They Had: I’d love to see a few options without the brown accents.
Best Belt: VRLEGEND Leather Belt
- Comprised of high quality smooth Micro Fiber Leather material with shiny finish. High quality...
- Come with a belt puncher,If the belt is too long for you, you can trim the strap length to fit your size
- Fit waist up to 70" for big and tall men,Belt length (full length of belt strap):78" (200cm）
When you have a larger waist, ordinary belts don’t cut it.
Sure, you can add a hole or two, but then you have an awkwardly short amount of material hanging out at the end.
Rather than endlessly adding holes or giving up on belts altogether, I invested in one specifically made for guys with wider waists.
The best part is that from the start, the size will accommodate up to a 70-inch waist. The belt does come with a hole puncher if you are between sizes, or you can trim the strap length to fit you exactly.
The fabric is supremely durable. It is anti-tear and resistant to scratches.
The classic look will compliment pretty much any outfit. When in doubt, a neutral, solid belt is a great place to start. You can wear it with jeans, dress pants, shorts, and more. But if you want more options, check out our list of the best belts for fat guys here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of jeans should fat guys wear?
I rave about the Wrangler Comfort Flex Waist Jeans (Amazon link). These are my ride or die, tried and true, have four pairs in all different colors, #1 pick.
They check all the boxes (and then some). They’re loose and comfortable without being baggy, flattering in all the right places, true to size, and come in a wide range of colors.
Oh, and there is a one-year satisfaction guarantee on these puppies. I mean, what other jeans do you know that come with their own warranty? Case and point.
I have an entire list of my favorite jeans for big guys here.
If there was one perfect outfit for heavy guys, what would it be?
Man, there are so many ways to dress well if you are a big guy! You should never feel like there is one “perfect” outfit.
However, I think a pair of dark pants or jeans, a classic V-neck t-shirt, and dark brown shoes are a great combo. You can find me in that uniform pretty much every day.
What kind of outfits do girls find most attractive on fat guys?
More than anything, girls are attracted to a man who feels confident. No matter what you’re wearing, if you wear it with an attitude of confidence, you will look (and feel!) great.
So, whether that’s a nice suit, or shorts and a t-shirt, if you feel good about yourself, you will exude self-confidence.
Will wearing short sleeves make my arms look fat?
No, not if you pick the right kind of short sleeves. Being fat doesn’t mean you have to cover everything up, you just have to work your size in a way that is flattering. Big guys can even look good in no sleeves at all if you want to rock the tank top look.
When you wear short sleeves, go for styles that are looser throughout the shoulder and arm. A good rule is that you should be able to fit a couple of fingers between the sleeve and your skin.
If the sleeves are too tight, they will constrict your arms and actually make you look bigger than you are.
Additionally, you won’t be very comfortable.
If you want to ditch the long sleeves, but aren’t ready to commit to exposing your entire arm, you could start by slightly rolling up your long-sleeve shirt. Cuff the bottom a couple of times to achieve a cool look that isn’t as committed to a full-on short sleeve top.
Can big guys wear skinny jeans?
Just by the name, I think we can all agree that skinny jeans are not the best for us fat dudes. They just aren’t designed with us in mind.
No offense to the guys out there who wear them. You do you! But if you have bulky legs and thick calves, skinny jeans probably aren’t going to be comfortable or flattering. The proportions of skinny jeans will usually make our legs look wider.
Why do I keep getting sweat stains on my shirts?
I know I am not the only one here who dreads the summer because of those pesky sweat stains. Heck, sometimes it doesn’t even have to be hot out for me to start feeling that dreaded moisture in my armpits.
Just so we are clear, this isn’t a figment of your imagination. Us big guys actually do sweat more.
That’s because our fat stores actually trap more heat than a smaller person.
The heat raises our core body temperature, which makes our sweat glands react and produce excess sweat.
Are all white shirts see-through?
White shirts aren’t all see-through, but a lot of them are. Why? That is because they are usually made with materials that are as breathable as possible, so the material is very thin.
In addition, the white color appears even more transparent when the sun shines directly on it.
For the majority of us, white shirts cause a problem because they make us feel insecure.
One way to combat the white shirt debacle is to wear a sturdy under-shirt.
Be careful not to wear a sleeveless undershirt with a sleeved white shirt, though. If you do, it might look even worse because you will be able to see the under-shirt right through it.
Instead, match your undershirt sleeves to the outside shirt’s sleeves. I prefer V-neck undershirts with short sleeves. That way, the sleeve area is covered and the neck is not obvious.
There is nothing worse than wearing a polo or another V-neck shirt with a crew neck undershirt. That pop of white from the undershirt around your neck undermines the entire illusion you can create with a V-neck top.
Do I have to stick to wearing only black?
You might have heard that black is slimming, which can be true. However, really any solid neutral has a slimming effect since it trains the eye to look at the whole, rather than dividing into choppy parts.
You can certainly add pops of color to your wardrobe, just don’t wear them all at once.
Even though black is a classic color option, don’t force yourself to make it your favorite color just because it has a reputation of being the most slimming.
If I am trying to lose weight, should I buy clothes that I think will fit me later on?
No way! Choose clothes that fit you right NOW. You might have to go shopping again in the future (if you do end up losing weight), but you should focus on the present.
I’ve been there. When I was trying to lose weight, I would purposefully buy clothing a size or two smaller than what fit me and use it as a “goal” piece.
What ended up happening was that I would feel bad for not being able to fit into it yet and those items ended up sitting unworn in my closet forever.
Wear what makes you look best at this point in time. Doing that will give you the most confidence.
What style of neckline is best?
The most flattering neckline on big guys is for sure the V-neck style. V-neck collars help elongate your face, neck, and torso.
In contrast to crew necks, which exaggerate a round face and thick neck, V-necks are universally flattering.
If V-neck t-shirts aren’t your style, you don’t have to feel left out. A V-neck is actually a very broad category.
Polos, dress shirts (with the top button undone), and even fishing shirts are all types of V-necks that you might not have thought of.
Can big guys wear turtlenecks?
Well, some can, but in general? I’m going to say no.
Of course, you can wear anything. I am not here to discourage feeling good. So, if you are feeling yourself in a turtle neck, you do you!
But for most of us, turtlenecks will make us look even bigger. Essentially, they make your neck disappear.
Necks are naturally a slimming body part because they define the top half of the body. They separate two very large pieces of us – the head and shoulders/chest.
When you are shopping for sweaters, find ones with a V-neck to create the illusion of a slimmer neckline.
How can I hide my love handles?
Love handles can be pretty prominent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t camouflage them. Here are my top three tips for hiding love handles:
- Wear high-waisted pants. High-waisted pants usually sit right at or above your belly button. This positioning makes them great for hiding love handles because the excess belly fat will usually be inside of the pants, not hanging over them.
- Add a structured jacket. One of the best ways I’ve found to disguise the gut is to wear a tailored blazer. Throw the jacket on over a polo, button-down shirt, or any other kind of top. The jacket’s loose-fitting sides glide over the belly, hiding the excess bulge.
- Don’t tuck in your shirt too tightly. Tucking in your shirt will create definition, but you might be wary of tucking it in if you have love handles. When this happens, still tuck, but don’t tuck it in quite so tightly. This isn’t your old school uniform – you can “un-tuck-it” a little bit and won’t end up in detention. By giving your shirt a looser tuck, the fabric around your love handles will be indistinguishable from the love handles themselves.
What should I wear in the summer when it’s really hot?
Growing up in the South, I understand that summers are hot and they are humid. Wearing anything short of a swimsuit can leave you feeling like you are sweltering in a sauna.
But, you can’t walk around in solely a swimsuit for the hottest months of the year. And, some of us might not ever feel comfortable enough to bare everything in a swimsuit.
When it comes to soaring temperatures, opt for lightweight fabrics. You would be surprised how cool you will feel even in a long-sleeve shirt if it’s made of the right material. Linen is a great example.
Especially if the area is also sunny, you never want to have too much exposed skin or you will be at risk for a dangerous sunburn.
Whether you are big and tall, short and fat, built like a football player or just embracing the dad bod, you deserve to be stylish and comfortable.
You certainly do NOT have to lose weight to look good in casual clothes. It comes down to choosing the right staple items and accessories to accentuate your assets.
Remember, you do you!
